Thompson is making its grand debut in the Eternal City.
The Hyatt outpost has just unveiled its new hotel in Rome, its first venture in the city and one of many new locales to pop up on the scene there as of late. The Thompson Rome will be housed in a refurbished 1940s landmark a mere 10-minute walk from the Pantheon—and we got an exclusive first look inside.
The 69-room spot is perched right on Via delle Botteghe Oscure, near Piazza Venezia, and it pays homage to its postwar history throughout. Original details such as the massive marble staircase and a sculptural wall and inlaid floor from Italian creative Gio Pomodoro—which were unearthed during the renovation—have been restored with the new hotel. Thompson chose to pair those classic centerpieces with bespoke furniture, neutral-hued materials, and other details for a more modern touch.
Art throughout the space also reflects that balance of traditional and contemporary. The new hotel shows off works from creatives from the Scuola Romana and the Scuola di Piazza del Popolo 20th-century art movements alongside more modern pieces dotted throughout the property. That idea was inspired by its proximity to the Crypta Balbi museum, in a part of Rome that has an influx of artists, scholars, and more from Europe across the centuries.
